Monasteries, mountains and magnificent architecture: the best of Bulgaria
What not to miss on a visit to this culturally rich country.

Welcome to Bulgaria: a land of magnificent monasteries
While some are a carnival of colour, others are characterised by a serene tranquillity.
Annie Kay first visited Bulgaria in 1974 and continues to be a regular visitor. She has been the Chairman of the British-Bulgarian Society since 2010 and received an award from the Bulgarian Ministry of Culture in 2013 for her contribution to popularizing Bulgarian culture in Britain. She writes for a variety of magazines on Bulgarian topics and for 16 years wrote the Bulgarian section of Mitchell Beazley’s best-selling Pocket Guide to Wine. She is a part-time resident of central Sofia, where she recently undertook a project with the deputy mayor to create information boards about the historic and unusual trees in her local park.
