Long-distance walks from Bishop’s Castle

If exploring Bishop’s Castle on foot takes your fancy, we can help.

From near the church of St John the Baptist in Bishop’s Castle you can pick up the Kerry Ridgeway to Kerry in Powys, a 15-mile walking route through heaths, moors and woodland that took drovers from farms in Wales to lowland livestock markets in England. Walking atop the ridge, always at least 1,000 feet above sea level, you’re promised long-distance views over Wales on one side and England on the other.

And if a substantial walk around this part of Shropshire appeals, check out the Bishop’s Castle Ring which runs in a 62-mile circle around Bishop’s Castle, taking in treasures that include Hopton Castle, Aston on Clun, the Long Mynd, the Stiperstones and Mitchell’s Fold Stone Circle. Devised by experienced local walkers the waymarked route is divided into five roughly 12-mile sections so you can retreat to the comfort of Bishop’s Castle’s hostelries each evening.
