Hilary Bradt judge of our To Oldly Go competition, and contributor to the book, offers a brief report on the competition’s entries.
Finally the decision is made: 41 stories to fit our 41 years of publishing. It was not easy. So many joyful stories of finding a new freedom to explore, both physically and mentally, during the later years of life. Older travellers found themselves in tricky situations, confronting new challenges, or just testing their physical capabilities. Jennifer Barclay, the editor, and I have tried to choose as varied a selection as possible, balancing good writing against the strength of the story itself. I think we’ve succeeded.
The selected writers, as well as the ones who only just didn’t make it, will be informed by Jennifer this week. And for the unsuccessful ones, don’t lose heart. We enjoyed reading all the stories and it’s the travel itself that matters most.
To Oldly Go will be published in September (and take a look at the wonderful cover image below).
