Shakespeare’s birthday

The Bard’s birthday is celebrated every April.

Written by Caroline Mills

23 April may be St George’s Day, but in Stratford-upon-Avon it is Shakespeare’s birthday. There are always celebrations happening on that day in town, no more so than at his birthplace.

You’ll usually find a piece of birthday cake somewhere, and a pageant and procession from the birthplace to ‘Shakespeare’s Church’, where he’s buried, takes place every year on the Saturday closest to his birthday. The procession is led by boys from the King Edward VI Grammar School, where he was a pupil, and includes representatives from organisations in the town, other schoolchildren, foreign dignitaries and members of the RSC. The procession files through the church, placing flowers upon Shakespeare’s grave to the ringing of the church bells and music from the organ.
