Wilderness Weekends

In this inspiring book, outdoor adventurer Phoebe Smith explains how – with the right gear, information and attitude – you can embrace the wild right here in the UK. And this need not mean scaling the highest peaks or breaking endurance records. Just put aside a weekend, choose your chunk of wilderness and get yourself out there.

With 26 specially chosen weekends, ranging from Dartmoor to the Scottish Highlands, this book offers a feast of outdoor adventure – from backpacking between bothies to summit-sleeping beneath the stars. Step-by-step instructions, detailed maps and top insider tips provide full guidance and practical advice to first-timers and old-hands alike. Wherever you live in the UK, there’s a wilderness weekend no more than five hours from your door.

Britain’s Best Small Hills

You don’t need to scale mountains to find adventure. In this practical guide, outdoors expert Phoebe Smith has carefully selected 60 of her favourite small hills across the length and breadth of England, Scotland and Wales with the aim of encouraging everyone – no matter how young or old – to get out there and enjoy Britain’s magnificent scenery.

Whether you’re a seasoned hiker in search of a new challenge or you just fancy a rejuvenating walk during your lunch break, this book contains inspirational ideas, step-by-step directions and detailed maps. Phoebe offers tips on where to wild camp, suggestions for adrenaline-pumping added thrills – from scrambling and fell running to caving and sky diving – and tells some of the fascinating histories surrounding these pint-sized peaks.

The Wilderness Cookbook

Whether you’re a seasoned hiker or first-time explorer, the food you eat when you go wild can disappoint: dehydrated camping meals crammed with preservatives and colourings. There is another way. The Wilderness Cookbook is packed with mouth-watering options that can be prepared quickly from a limited number of lightweight ingredients on a single stove.

But of course the ‘secret ingredient’ in any special wilderness meal is the landscape around you. Phoebe Smith matches her 50 recipes with specific terrains – riverside, coast, mountains, moorland and woodland – to help you make the most of the resources to hand. Breakfast on Berry Blast Pancakes alongside Afon Gamlan in North Wales, dine on Camping Quesadillas in North Yorkshire’s Robin Hood’s Bay and snack on Whisky Cheese Fondue on Ben Nevis. So grab your ‘Go Bag’ and head off to the wilderness for a culinary adventure.

About the Author

Travel writer, broadcaster and presenter Phoebe Smith likes to sleep wild – from caves to mountain tops, disused farmsteads and under giant boulders – if it’s a wild place she wants to take out her sleeping bag and bivvy and experience a wild night out. As such, she knows how important it is to be well-fuelled for your adventures and over the years has honed her skills to cook the perfect wild camping meals with limited ingredients that are light enough to carry into the wilderness.

She has seen her love of wilderness take her on solo adventures all around the world – from wild camping on the Scottish islands to portaledging in trees in the Bavarian Alps and bedding down inside glaciers in Svalbard – the last stop before the North Pole.

Phoebe Smith specialises in adventure, travel, camping, gear and the outdoors. She is also the author of several books including Wilderness Weekends: Wild adventures in Britain’s rugged corners and Britain’s Best Small Hills: A guide to wild walks, short adventures, scrambles, great views, wild camping & more, both published by Bradt, as well as Extreme Sleeps: adventures of a wild camper, and the first guidebook to British bothies: Book of the Bothy.
