The Connemara story
Inspired by one of her childhood pony books, in 1984, Hilary Bradt achieved her long-held ambition to undertake a long-distance ride. Using her experience of horsepacking in Peru, with saddlebags imported from America, she and her pony, Mollie, set forth in Ireland’s County Galway with no decent maps and only a vague idea of a route.
They faced many challenges and obstacles together, including impassable rivers, bogs, stone walls and travelling alone for the first time for decades. The second part of the journey, with Peggy, concluded the thousand mile journey near Limerick, having travelled most of the western coast and the inland hills.
Some obstacles seemed insurmountable: “I’ve never tried hitchhiking with a horse before,” says Hilary at one point, faced with the broad River Shannon estuary. “It’s not easy!”
Hilary’s accounts of her journey, which combines descriptions of the people and landscape of long-ago Ireland with a growing appreciation of the debt she owes those two ponies, are being republished for the first time in a single volume, A Connemara Journey.
