We’re thrilled to announce the shortlist for the 2022 Bradt New Travel Writer of the Year competition, in association with the Edward Stanford Travel Writing Awards.
All three finalists were invited to the Edward Stanford Travel Writing Awards ceremony at Stanfords bookshop in London, where the overall winner, Ruth Cox, was announced. You can read her winning entry here.
Notes from the judges
Janice Booth said of the longlist and judging process:
“Another year, another travel-writing competition: which, as it has for the past 20-odd years, produced a widely varied crop of entries that the judges are guaranteed to enjoy reading and arguing over! The writing varies, of course, but much of it is excellent; every year you find fresh, vivid and original descriptions for familiar things that could easily have slipped into cliché. The stories feature well over 30 different countries, and locations as diverse as Mumbai and Marrakesh or Annapurna and Antarctica. Reflecting Covid restrictions, more of these than in previous years are relatively close to the writer’s home.”
Because the competition was so strong, we also awarded Highly Commended to the following entries which just missed out on being finalists:

This year all the entries on the longlist received a vote from at least one of the judges, so the remaining entries are all Commended. We’re pleased to list them again here, with the authors’ names attached to them now the judging process has been completed. Congratulations again to all our authors!
