About this book

A once-fractured country, as its complex history proves too well, Macedonia now offers a rich mixture of sightseeing options. Nature lovers and history buffs will be delighted by pristine landscapes and an impressive archaeological heritage. Visit the crumbling Treskavec Monastery, bathe in the hot springs at Katlanovska Banja and wander through the backstreets of Kratovo, a village set entirely within an ancient volcanic crater. The most comprehensive guidebook to Macedonia is now in its fifth edition. Written by Thammy Evans, a political analyst who lived in Macedonia for five years, Bradt's Macedonia makes the ideal travelling companion, whether you're trekking through pristine Pelister National Park, viewing stunning mosques and monasteries or just relaxing with a cocktail on the shores of Lake Ohrid.

very informative
Review by Katja
We used a combination of this and the Albanian guides when hiking the Via Egnatia from Durres to Thesaloniki. A really informative (and sometimes even funny) read to find out more about the history and culture and made me want to visit more of the country that I had the time to (hopefully going back to make best use of the guide!). It was very reliable even when covering a lot of the less touristy towns and bus routes.
Absolutely recommended!

As usual, an excellent and readable guide.
Review by Oliver
Macedonia is one of the great 'unknown' areas of Europe. An extraordinary country nestling in the centre of the Balkans with a host of cultural, natural, culinary and other delights. Easily reachable form Albania, Greece Kossovo and Bulgaria, Macedonia has a relatively effective infrastructure, a legacy of Yugoslavia, and has invested a lot to create its own modern identity, sometimes with mixed results. Skopje, it self a relatively modern city, has been transformed into a historical theme park with a series of surreal new monuments. Contrast this with beautiful Ochrid mirrored in its high lake, and generally overlooked Bitola, once the Turkish metropolis of the northern Balkans. The Bradt Guide covers all these places, and the surrounding countryside, with is mix op population, which was what prompted the 19th century to give its name to the mixed fruit salad. But Macedonia is much more than a topical desert. The guide provides a quick way to get the best out of the country, well written and illustrated with maps. With the help of the Bradt guide and a local guide (Katerina Vasileska katerina.vasileska@gmail.com , also recommended!) a recent visit was made easy and fun.
