For the traveller, Kurdistan Iraq is virgin country. Not yet full of tourists, the people and the country are warm and welcoming and it is a great place to visit. However, the lack of tourist infrastructure does mean that for most of the time travellers have to seek out many of the sites themselves. Here we mention the main sites of interest – from Erbil to Dohuk and Lalish, but there are still many out of the way, long-forgotten places full of history waiting to be discovered. Kurdistan also has a lot of caves, whose history we can currently only guess at. The hills and mountains of Kurdistan are part of its character and history, places of refuge in ancient and more modern times. So whether you have a guide, a guidebook or just intend striking out to explore as the road takes you, a little knowledge of the area will help you appreciate the treasures you will encounter along the way.
