This spectacular bridge spans Europe’s grandest canyon and the river of the same name, the latter off ering a variety of rafting and kayaking options.
When leaving Žabljak to the east, crossing the plain in the direction of Tara and Pljevlja (37km from Žabljak), the road divides at about 23km. One way leads south down the Tara Canyon towards Mojkovac, Kolašin and Podgorica, the other crosses the vertiginous Tara Bridge (Đurđvića Tara), poised 150m above the river, and heads north towards Pljevlja. No Samaritan telephones here, just two sobering monuments.
One is in memory of Lazar Jauković, the engineer who bravely detonated its fifth arch on the left bank in 1942 to prevent the passage of enemy forces and died for his efforts; the bridge had only been completed a year before and through Jauković’s skill the rest of it remained intact and could be reconstructed in 1946 according to the original plans. The other is the bust, erected by his mother, of a handsome young Partisan hero killed in April 1941.
