Ramla Bay - A view from our expert author

This lovely red sandy bay is unsurprisingly Gozo’s most popular beach. Known locally as Ramla il-Hamra (‘the red sandy beach’!), it received a blue flag for the first time in 2012. It can get quite crowded on summer weekends but it is large enough to cope. There is a fairly gentle slope into clear blue water ideal for swimming, with rocks at the margins and further out for snorkelling. Much of the beach has stones at the water’s edge so covering for the feet is helpful especially for kids. In summer there is a cleared area without stones and with a lifeguard and flags indicating the state of the water. A red flag (rip currents) or purple (jellyfish) means it is very inadvisable to swim. If these flags show, head for a bay on the other side of the island (eg: Xlendi or Mġarr ix-Xini).
