Gazimağusa’s beaches - A view from our expert author

Home to some of the best beaches on the island, Gazimağusa is an essential outing for anyone looking to soak up the sun.

If beaches are your priority, then the Gazimağusa region is for you. The immense sweep of Gazimağusa Bay is one of the finest stretches of sand anywhere in the Mediterranean. Nearly all the region’s hotels are situated along this bay and have excellent beaches and watersports facilities. For sightseeing, the major classical site of the island, Salamis, is on your doorstep, as are a few lesser attractions, such as St Barnabas Monastery and the Royal Tombs. Kantara Castle is also close by and you are well placed to explore the Karpas Peninsula.

As a base for a holiday on the island, the Gazimağusa region is more limited than Girne. Most meals will probably be taken in your hotel, since eating elsewhere becomes an excursion in itself, unless you are staying in Boğaz. Shopping is a lot less sophisticated. Visits to the major sights of the Girne area, such as Bellapais and St Hilarion, become quite lengthy trips, and visits even further west, to places such as Vouni and Soli, become impracticable without an overnight stay.
