The highest of the island’s three Crusader fortresses is a must-see for those who love heights, castles and adventure.

An essential outing for all who love heights, castles and adventure. This is the highest of the island’s three Crusader fortresses, and the most difficult to reach. However, its setting is the most dramatic of any ruin on the entire island and well worth the trip. Remember to pack your head for heights, as the final 8km of the approach is along a precipitous, though well-surfaced, road. The steep climb on foot from where the road ends to the summit takes about 45 minutes, often on a concrete pathway and steps, with very little shade. There’s no longer any guardian at the castle, so in theory you can visit any time and although the military has been known to restrict visiting days in the past, no evidence of this practice was apparent at the time of writing. The drive from Girne to the car park below the castle takes about 45 minutes.
