Despite the oil wealth, Equatorial Guinea has many issues associated with poverty. NGOs must tread a fine line between trying to help improve the situation, without overtly criticising the ruling regime. As such, the NGOs allowed to operate in the country tend to focus on uncontroversial areas such as education and healthcare, as opposed to the more sensitive issues of transparency, good governance and human rights issues.
