Budapest Competition Winner

The day has come. We were overwhelmed by the response to our ‘To Boldly Go’ competition. Launched in celebration of Wanderlust’s description of Bradt as ‘the Captain Kirk of travel publishers’ – and with a prize of a holiday for two to Budapest – the competition invited you to submit photos showing your experiences of travelling boldly (together with a short description explaining the background to each one). We had images of trips taken all over the world, from Dorset to Spitsbergen. Some were fun and others serious, some shots of cities and others of places at the planet’s very extremities.

It was a tough job whittling these down to a shortlist of eight finalists. And a tougher job to choose a winner. That job fell to Viktor Hajko, founder of Hungary4U, who has kindly arranged the wonderful competition prize. After a great deal of cogitation and procrastination, Viktor finally chose the entry by Alexander Lackner, shown below, as the competition’s overall winner.

Viktor said: ‘I found all the entries on the final shortlist compelling – each had its own unique merits – but in the end Alexander’s entry stood out. I loved the obvious sense of relief and achievement felt by Alexander’s girlfriend on completing the hike. And the obvious contrast between the rugged terrain and the beautifully painted nails is wonderfully symbolic: this is clearly a city girl going boldly into unfamiliar territory!’

Congratulations to Alexander, who wins a four-day luxury break for two in Budapest (provided courtesy of Hungary4U,, Corinthia Hotel Budapest, Budapest Card, the Museum of Fine Arts and the St Lukács Thermal Baths). And congratulations too to the seven runners-up, each of whom win a Bradt guide to Budapest.  To view the eight shortlisted entries please click here
