Husband and wife team Gary and Carol Fry offer 4x4 tours from Weymouth or Wareham along the Dorset coast. Tours start from two hours and cover different areas, such as the Isle of Portland, the Purbeck Hills, Thomas Hardy country near Dorchester or the area around Golden Cap. Both from farming families, Gary and Carol have lived in Dorset all their lives and have devised routes that take you off the beaten track, along country lanes and ancient byways. This means that not only will you see great views, you may see some good wildlife as well. The trusty Land Rover takes up to six people; it makes easy work of the off-roading and gives the whole experience a real ‘safari’ feel. Gary provides an enthusiastic commentary, using his local knowledge to full effect.
I ventured out with Gary and Carol around Golden Cap. I have driven and walked around the area extensively but the 4x4 tour provided views from a different perspective that made it seem like a whole new landscape. As with all their safaris, we were treated to one of Carol’s homemade cakes when the time came for us to have our tea break. Jurassic Safaris are ideal for those who lack the time, ability or inclination to walk to the best vantage points on the coast, but I expect that like me, even locals and regular visitors to the area who take one of these trips will see the area in a different way. The Land Rover is wheelchair accessible (www.jurassicsafari.co.uk).
