Christina Ammon: Committed to the World

Unlike most, when thirty-something Christina Ammon inherited her grandmother's 3.21-carat diamond ring, she didn't decide to squirrel it away in a safe hidden in the depths of her basement, but instead set up a website and online auction in an effort to raise money for local initiatives she'd witnessed and heard about during her travels around the world. Here Christina shares with Bradt the thinking behind her unique project: Committed to the World, as well as her plans for the future.

How or why did you think of the ring project?

This idea sprang to life after I inherited my deceased grandmother's impressive diamond ring. It arrived in the mail on a winter day. I wore the ring for two weeks and it was gorgeous! So many compliments! But it didn't take me long to realise that it didn't really suit me. I live a rough lifestyle, travelling to developing countries, paragliding, living in and out of my van for parts of the year.

Read the entire interview and find out more about Christina's next project: Ring for Haiti.

Stuff Your Rucksack for... Crossroads Central Asia

StuffYourRucksack.com needs your eyes and ears! If you're off travelling, as well as stuffing some stuff in your rucksack (or suitcase on wheels – we're not fussy!), please keep your eyes peeled for organisations that deserve support.

This month we feature Crossroads Central Asia, a non-profit organisation dedicated to helping the needy of central Asia. With a warehouse in Shymkent, Kazakhstan, Crossroads collects cast-offs from individuals and institutions and redistributes these among needy families, orphanages and schools throughout central Asia. Before you head to the region why not stock up on medical supplies, or save space for an old laptop or computer? Whatever you can pack, Crossroads would like to hear from you! Visit www.crossroads.kz for more information.

New and Forthcoming Titles

100 Bizarre Animals

100 Bizarre Animals

Some animals just look weird. Take the mandrill, whose outrageous face is coloured to mimic its genitals. Others behave strangely – a mallee fowl builds huge mounds of rotting vegetation in which to incubate its eggs. Some are plain ingenious, such as the cartwheeling spider, which turns itself into a wheel to roll down sand dunes when it needs to make a sharp exit. With glorious (and sometimes grotesque) full-colour photography throughout, 100 Bizarre Animals celebrates the antics and appearance of the world's wackiest creatures.
