New Life Mexico - Sewing School
February 7th, 2011 by Helen CalderonBradt Travel Guides has offered a small contribution towards The LATA Foundation. The LATA Foundation was set up by the Latin America Travel Association (LATA). It supports a range of projects helping to put something back into Latin America. With these funds the LATA Foundation are purchasing 12 sewing machines and setting up a new sewing school in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico.
The school will hold three classes a day. With twelve machines they will be able to train 36 people every three months. The sewing machines will be owned by local NGO New Life Mexico and will be loaned to the school. The local authorities have pledged to provide a building and a teacher.
36 women – and it will usually be women attending the classes – will be trained every quarter to receive new skills from which they can then generate an income, making and repairing clothes for local residents or schools or items for the tourist markets.
